MIPG is one of the oldest and longest active research groups in the world engaged in research on the processing, visualization, and analysis of medical images and the medical and clinical applications of these computerized methods. It was formed in the Department of Computer Science, (then) State University of New York, Buffalo, in 1976 by Gabor Herman. Udupa joined the group in 1978. The whole group moved to University of Pennsylvania, its current home, in 1981. Udupa was appointed the section chief in 1991. Please see the following publication for further information on the early days of MIPG and its activities until 2001: Udupa, J.K., and Herman, G.T.: Medical image reconstruction, processing, visualization, and analysis: The MIPG perspective, IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging, 21:281-295, April 2002.
